URGENT POST EARTHQUAKE RETROFITTING OF HEAVY DAMAGE STRUCTURES, USING NEW INJECTION MATERIALS MADE IN ROMANIA - SEIMINJECT

Project summary

The structural and nonstructural elements injuries after an important earthquake suppose a special reaction of the people who see how their home structures are damaged. In the most of the cases, after panic period and sensibility passes goes to "cosmetisations" who hide the structure’s and nonstructural elements defects, which at a future earthquake can provoke human victims and structures partial crash and collapse, as well.

The European Community tries mainly to use this method for monuments rehabilitation (Italy, Spain) but the best of the materials contractors in this field is Japan. Germany developed more types of materials and solutions based on composite materials or additives that answer better to the emergency systems damages not civil structures

The program proposes to create injection "Kitts" for many types of crakes for masonry and reinforced concrete structures, as well that can be distributed or bought by the affected people. These "Kitts" based on advanced new materials will have attached instruction guides and will can be directly or with technical assistance used by the beneficiary.

The research theme will contain a wide experimental validation program covering the most existing vulnerable structural types in the possible risk areas from SV of Europe.

Relevance of the project

Even if the synthesis and the silicones study have begun 60 years ago, they continue to stimulate the scientific people interest due to their versatile and facile to handle chemistry. New generations of silicones polymers are developing to satisfy the specific needs. There are many companies which produce at industrial level all the range of silicones products (Dow Corning, Rhone-Poulenc, Wacker Chemie, Bayer AG, ICI, Midland, Petrarch Systems Company, etc) These products are sailed on different names function of the producers. Their cost is very high. Unknowing their composition and their action mode a correct utilisation can’t be done, especially in new fields. According to one of the partners experience this project proposes to obtain silicones based on materials using original solutions of the other partner’s skills to utilise it for building rehabilitation.

Ø  According to a rigorous documentation, the project, in a way, is completing the database for silicons industry development in Romania and is part of the general efforts for the national industry’s improvement.

Ø This project proposes to create injection "Kitts" for different types of cracks for damaged masonry and reinforced concrete structures from seismic loads which can be distributed and bought by the affected people. These "Kitts" based on advanced new materials will have attached instruction guides and will can be directly or with technical assistance used by the beneficiary.

Ø The project represents a challenge in coupling two apparent different scientific fields: chemistry and construction, linked by materials science.

Taking into account the interdisciplinary and experience in this field of the team that proposes the project, formed by partnership and the preliminary results, the objectives are viable and with minimal risks for their achievement.

Brief presentation

The project presents an interdisciplinary research field supposing the involving of specialists from three different science fields as chemistry, materials science and construction, which confers its originality and complexity.

The specific objective’s reach supposes a big number of activities and a good collaboration between the partners, the feed back being an important factor in actions leading for obtain the expected effect.

The European Community tries mainly to use this method for monuments rehabilitation (Italy, Spain) but the best of the materials contractors in this field is Japan. Germany developed more types of materials and solutions based on composite materials or additives that answer better to the emergency systems damages not civil structures
